PE and Sports Fund Plan 2023-2024
At St Mary's we value Physical Education and sports and recognise the importance of both physical and academic development. Our children take part in a wide variety of activities as part of the PE curriculum, including gymnastics, dance, games, athletics, swimming and outdoor and adventurous activities. We also provide extra curricular opportunities, which you may read more about on our extra curricular clubs and activities page.
Swimming
We are fortunate to have our own indoor swimming pool at the school and the children from all year groups enjoy swimming for the majority of the year. Our specialist swimming instructors make sure that the children grow up as safe, confident swimmers. They also run extra curricular clubs in the summer term.
We are proud to have been consecutive winners of the four most recent Dengie Schools' Swimming Galas in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022 and 2023.
We are members of the William de Ferrers School Sports Partnership and we take part in lots of local sports events and competitions including rounders, football, dodgeball, cross country, netball, swimming, tag rugby, orienteering, athletics and cricket. We are always proud of the children who represent us at these competitions and they often make it through to finals, as well as winning or gaining top places.
School Sports Day and Dengie Sports Day
Our school sports day is always a real celebration of the year of sport and physical activity. The day usually forms part of a focus week, including different types of physical activity. We use Sports Day to promote a positive attitude towards competition and develop good sportsmanship. We also take part in the local Dengie Sports event every year when the children are able to compete against their peers from the local primary schools.
Other activities
We give the children opportunities to take part in a variety of sports and adventurous activities. Forest Schools is a regular part of our curriculum and we are fortunate to have the Bradwell Outdoors Centre nearby, where the children enjoy activities such as mountain biking, high ropes and sailing.
